RIVER
EDEN AND TRIBUTARIES
Cumbria
has more fishing waters than any other county in England and the
river Eden and its tributaries are jewels in its crown. The Eden,
which rises in Mallerstang near Swaledale, Yorkshire, has a length
of 70 miles and is one of the finest angling rivers in the country.
It is foremost as a river for salmon. Brown trout are abundant and
although they do not generally grow very large, they provide excellent
sport for the angler.
The tributaries hold many trout which thrive in the clean waters:
the rivers Lowther, Eamont, lrthing, Petteril and Caldew have plenty
of cover and gravel beds which are ideal for the brown trout. Although
the Eden is primarily a game fish river, it also holds many grayling,
chub and dace.
The
river passes through some of the most beautiful countryside in the
North of England and gives pleasure to both the anglers and those
who love to be beside flowing water. From Kirkby Stephen, through
Warcop, to Appleby and Temple Sowerby, the river holds many trout
and gives excellent fishing to the anglers who fish in these upper
parts of the river. From Lazonby down-stream through Armathwaite
to Wetheral and Warwick Bridge, and the City of Carlisle towards
the Solway, the pools and streams are ideal for the salmon angler.
