The Carlisle Angling Association had it’s birth at a meeting held in the Royal Hotel on Friday, 17th December 1852; when it was resolved “That an Association be formed for the better protection of the River Eden and it’s tributaries with a view to the preservation and increase of the fish therein and for the improvement of angling in the District.” Those attending the meeting were men of some means, owners of small businesses, professional men and shopkeepers. In those days the working men were too poor to pursue angling as a sport.

Carlisle Angling Association have always had an underlying philosophy regarding the affordability of salmon angling on waters under their control, and as such still offer extremely cheap salmon fishing on a seasonal basis. This is ‘ salmon angling for the people’ approach; an approach shared with Carlisle City Council, our oldest and closest partner.

The Association now provides angling for residents living within a five mile radius of Carlisle City Centre. Anglers outside the five mile limit are welcomed and permits are available for game and coarse angling on a daily, weekly, and seasonal basis.

WillowholmeCumbria has more fishing waters than any other county in England and the river Eden and its tributaries are jewels in its crown. The Eden, which rises in Mallerstang near Swaledale, Yorkshire, has a length of 70 miles and is one of the finest angling rivers in the country. It is foremost as a river for salmon. Brown trout are abundant and although they do not generally grow very large, they provide excellent sport for the angler. The tributaries hold many trout which thrive in the clean waters: the rivers Lowther, Eamont, lrthing, Petteril and Caldew have plenty of cover and gravel beds which are ideal for the brown trout. Although the Eden is primarily a game fish river, it also holds many grayling, chub and dace.
