Coarse Fish

The River Eden offers coarse fisherman, chub up to 7lbs, grayling over 2 lbs, dace and even perch to 2 lbs and although not as numerous as other species, pike over 20 lbs are caught. Grayling are found throughout most of the Eden, chub as far upstream as Appleby and there are dace from Armathwaite downstream to Warwick Hall then through the City of Carlisle towards the tidal stretches of the Solway.

Where to fish
There are several good stretches on the river in Carlisle ranging from fast streams to slow deep pools and smooth glides, including for example the Memorial Bridge and Castle stretches. Match anglers visit the Eden every year, and in particular the Carlisle and District Coarse Angling Club. The coarse angling club runs matches throughout the year on a variety of venues in the area, with matches on the river Eden during the winter months.

Nearby there is a variety of Stillwater fisheries in the area offering carp in excess of 20lbs, bream, perch, pike, roach , rudd and tench. Talkin Tarn near Brampton provides excellent perch fishing with fish over 4lbs and bags in excess of 20lbs, and pike are taken up to 22lbs on deadbaits with sardine as the favourite. On Crofton Lake near Carlisle mixed bags to over 100lbs have been taken – the lake contains carp, bream, gudgeon, perch, rudd, roach and tench.

How to fish
Ledgered bread flake or crust on a size 4 hook will usually prove to be successful for the massive chub, although it will pay not to introduce any groundbait on a first visit unless bites occur and fish are caught. Ideally these sould be fished on an Avon style rod, in conjunction with a quiver tip and 6 pound breaking strain line. Swim feeding with maggots for grayling, chub, or dace is a good method. Also trotting can be very productive.

One method that should not be ignored with grayling fishing or chub and dace fishing for that matter is swimfeedered maggot. Providing you can cast reasonably accurately the swimfeeder offers an excellent method of feeding a swim and putting your hookbait in amongst your groundbait. Fly fishing for grayling can also be a very productive method.

When to fish
On the river Eden a variety of baits can be used for coarse fish, however there are certain restrictions as follows :-

( 1 ) The use of keep nets, ground baiting and swim feeding are not allowed during the period when it is lawful to fish for salmon with rod and line, i.e. 15 January to 14 October inclusive.
( 2 ) No spinning is allowed for coarse fish.
( 3 ) Worm fishing will not be permitted from 15 October until 1 May, with the exception of juveniles who will be permitted to use worm for coarse fish.
( 4 ) Fishing with maggots between 15 March and 15 June is not allowed. There is no specific time to fish, however when fishing time is limited, it often pays to fish an hour either side of dusk when changing light values will often make the difference between a blank day and a day to remember.
